Here’s a basic recipe for fried green tomatoes:
1. Start by washing and slicing the green tomatoes into thick slices, about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Remove the stem and any blemishes.
2. In a shallow dish, mix together equal parts all-purpose flour and cornmeal or breadcrumbs. Season the mixture with salt and pepper according to your taste.
3. Pour buttermilk or milk into another shallow dish. Dip each tomato slice into the buttermilk or milk, allowing any excess liquid to drip off.
4. Coat the tomato slices in the flour-cornmeal mixture, pressing gently to ensure they are evenly coated.
5. Heat oil in a skillet or frying pan over medium heat. You’ll need enough oil to cover the bottom of the pan, about 1/4 inch deep.
6. Carefully place the coated tomato slices into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry them for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until they turn golden brown and crispy.
