Several methods exist for removing traces of rust from surfaces. Grandma’s good old tricks often prove effective. However, sometimes the use of cleaning products is required, especially when stains persist.
1 – AGAINST RUST ON PORCELAIN
To remove rust from the toilet bowl, pour a can of Coke into it and leave it to act overnight, the next day, scrub the bowl with an old toilet brush, then rinse.
To remove rust from the sink, mix borax and lemon juice to make a smooth paste. Spread it on the stain, then scrub gently with an old toothbrush. Repeat the operation as many times as necessary.
2 – AGAINST RUST ON PLASTIC
This method is not very ecological but it is particularly effective: remove the rust stain with a cloth soaked in hydrochloric acid. You can also try with ether or even methylated spirits (be careful to your hands and eyes because these solutions are quite corrosive).
3 – AGAINST RUST ON GLASS
Choose an oven cleaner to remove traces of rust from a window; just follow the product instructions.
4 – AGAINST RUST ON TOOLS
For larger tools, start by rubbing away rust with medium-grit sandpaper. Then, fill a 1.5 liter bucket with coke and soak the tools in it overnight. The rust will be gone the next morning. Vinegar is also an ecological, economical and very effective option.
