Delicious Bomboloni alla Crema Recipe (Italian Cream-Filled Doughnuts)

Ingredients:
For the Dough (Bomboloni):
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
3/4 cup whole milk, lukewarm
2 large eggs
4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Zest of 1 lemon (optional)
Vegetable oil (for frying)
For the Pastry Cream (Crema):
2 cups whole milk
1/2 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean (or 1 tablespoon vanilla extract)
4 large egg yolks
2 tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
For Coating:
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for rolling the bomboloni after frying)
